On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox took the first step on his Marathon of Hope
While in hospital recovering from bone cancer at just 18, Terry Fox was so overcome by the suffering of others that he vowed to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Enthusiasm grew as Terry ran, and donations poured in. Sadly, after 143 days and 5,373 km, just outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Terry was forced to stop when his cancer returned. Terry passed away the following year at age 22, but his legacy was just beginning.
