Description

50th Anniversary of the Construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway
From the time the first Europeans began searching for a trade route to the Orient, the St. Lawrence was believed to hold the key. Although rapids prevented explorers from travelling inland, the importance of the St. Lawrence grew, fuelled by the burgeoning fur trade that relied on it for transportation. Over the centuries, various canalsand locks were built to bypass the rapids. By 1895, the United States and Canada were discussing the joint development of a comprehensive waterway- a dream that did not materialize until August 10, 1954, the day when construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway began.
This coin is part of the 100-dollar coin collection which began in 1976. A coin has been released every year since then.
