TheFirst Canadian Arctic Expedition : A Window on Inuit Culture

Long before the First Canadian Espedition (1913-1916), which effectively opened the world to Inuit culture, visual arts and  storytelling had been used in Inuit communities to pass down knowledge from one generation to the other. This tradition continues today - particularly in the artistic community of Cape Dorset.

Lcated  on lower Baffin Island, Cape Dorset (know as Kinngait in Inuktitut) is know as the birthplace of Inuit printmaking, a variation on theJapanese tradition of printmaking, introduced to local artist who quickly developed their own unique style.

Kenojuak Ashevak was among the first wave of these Cape Droset artists to gain international recognition. Her drawings, prints and scultures made her an artistic pioneer, her works have been reproduced on Canadian stamps and on a 25-cent coin as part of thr Royal Canadian Mint's Millenium series. Cape Dorset's community's artwok helped pave the way for a new generation ofartists - including Ashevak's nephew, artist Tim Pitsiulak - to continue the visual storytelling that introduces new generations of Canadians to customs and folklore of the Canadian North.
