Star of the Pacific Coast

Canada has long been known as a land of breathtaking wildlife, but as technology enables scientists to explore its oceans like never before, a growing treasure-trove of wildlife is being discovered off the nation's shores.

The Pacific Coast of British Columbia is proving to be home to a remarkable diversity of wildlife. Its rocky, broken coastline has islands, bays, fjords and straits where crashing wavesand calm tidal pools combine to create a remarkably rich environment for marine life.

The Leather Star has tube feet for locomotion that also combine with sensors on its skin to sense its environment. It also has sensors on the tip of each armto locate prey. When it finds a shelled mollusc, a sea star can push its stomach out of its mouth located on the underside of its body and insert it into the shell to feed on the animal living inside.

Diet is dictated by the Leather Star's environment. In sheltered pools, it will eat sea cucumbers, sea pens and sponges; in tidalareas, it will consume sea anemones and sea squirts; and on the soft seabed, it will scavenge and eat virtually anything it can find.
