Blue Flag Iris

The Blue Flag Iris's stunning purple-blue flowers herald the warm months to come, beginning to blossom as early as May in some regions of Canada. Its stem,which grows to a height of nearly a metre, is topped with an elegant indigo bloom whose paler interior petals stand upright around a yellowcentre while the darker and larger outer sepals, decorated with lacy designs of feathery white, provide a perfect perch for butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. The Blue Flag Iris's leaves are equally lovely, growing nearly as tall as the flower stems witha width of up to 3 centimetres, to nicely fill out each attractive cluster of plants. Their dagger-like shape is often broken by a gracefuldownward fold, lending the plant a picturesque quality that has been famously captured by painters like Van Gogh.
