Over the course of several decades, Art Spiegelman has given new meaning to the term comic-book artist -- or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that Spiegelman has given new meaning to the terms comic book and artist. The tension between the marginal avant-gardiste and the mass-market audience informes the entire Spiegelman enterprise. It is present in his work as a graphic "fine" artist, as a creator of bubblegum trading cards, as a participant in the underground comix movement of the Counterculture Era, as the co-author of two influencial magazines (the AmericanArcade and the more international RAW), as a designer of book and CD jackets, as an illustrator and cover artist for The New Yorker, as a printmaker, as a connoisseur of obsolete mass-cultural forms and as -- how shall we say?-- the composer of an unprecedented novelistic but true-life memoir in comic-book form, Maus. In short, Spiegelman confounds the High/Low paradigm at every level.
